What are the benefits of debt review?

One of the obvious benefits of debt review is that you will pay less overall toward debt. This will help you free up some cash to better accommodate your living expenses.

Once your repayment plan is made an order of court, your creditors may no longer harass you or take further legal action to recover their money. This means that you will finally get some peace.

Debt review is a means to handle overwhelming debt in a slow, stable, and manageable way that ensures you can get out of debt permanently while protecting your assets and peace of mind.

An experienced, responsive debt review company

One thing that separates Credit Matters from other debt counselling agencies is that they’re easy to contact and responsive.

They also leverage their experience to ensure they negotiate well with creditors and structure your new payment plan in a way that makes good sense.

If you’re struggling to keep up with your debt repayments and want to make a change for the better, debt review is worth considering.

Credit Matters can help you decide if this is a good option for your circumstances and help you get the process started.

Credit Matters Services

Credit Matters specialise in debt review services. They offer a professional, tried-and-tested solution to your debt woes.

What is debt review?

Debt review is a legal process by which your debts are restructured to allow for a reduced combined monthly repayment that is more affordable.

This process was introduced by the NCA to help South Africans who are grappling with enormous debts.

Who benefits from debt review?

While most consumers think that debt review is a get-out-of-jail-free card, this is not the case. Not only will you likely be in debt for a longer period of time than you expect but you have to pay for the services of the debt counsellor, Payment Distribution Agency, and attorney.

You will not be able to take out any loans or credit while you’re under debt review and all credit bureaus will be notified of your status. It may take years to pay off the debt so careful planning and dedication to becoming debt free is required.

What are the benefits of debt review?

  • You get to put a stop to the endless debt cycle you struggling with
  • Lower overall payment towards debt will free up money for expenses
  • Your debt counsellor will help you create a solid budget
  • No more harassing calls and emails from creditors
  • Protect your home, car and other valuables from repossession
  • Only paying one monthly instalment to a PDA will make your debt easier to manage
  • You’ll remain clear of new debts while under debt review

How long does the debt review process take?

It can take anything up to eight years for the debt review process to come to an end and for you to be issued a clearance certificate. That said the process is normally over within five years.

While many people place a great deal of emphasis on this certificate, your status at the credit bureaus will be more than sufficient to convince credit providers that you’re out of debt.

How to apply for debt review with Credit Matters

The first step in undergoing debt review is to contact Credit Matters to arrange for a confidential and free assessment. This will enable your counsellor to determine whether you can be classified as over-indebted. This is the only way that you can be considered for debt review.

The easiest way to request an assessment is by completing the contact form on their website. You simply need to provide your name, email and contact number to have a debt counsellor contact you.

Once it has been established that you qualify for debt counselling, you can complete a formal application with the help of Credit Matters. Your debt counsellor will help you complete all the paperwork and will liaise with the attorneys who will have your repayment plan made an order of court.

What will your debt counsellor do for you?

  1. The counsellor will assess your level of over-indebtedness to determine if your qualify for debt review
  2. If you do, they'll assist you to make a formal debt review application
  3. The credit bureaus will be notified of your intention to undergo debt review
  4. Certificates of balance are collected from all your creditors who are informed that you have applied for debt review
  5. Your debt counsellor will restructure your debts and create a new payment plan that is more appropriate to your current income and debt
  6. They'll negotiate with your creditors to meet the restructured plan
  7. Once all the creditors have agreed, the plan will be made an order of court

What about administration?

Administration refers to a different legal process by which you can apply to the court to have a new debt repayment plan enforced on your creditors.

This process is much more complicated since it involves having your income managed and distributed by a debt administrator. This is an expensive option that should be considered only in very specific circumstances where alternatives are not available.
